At the World Health Assembly last month, world leaders approved the new post-2015 Global TB Strategy. The strategy has a number of ambitious targets, including reducing TB deaths by 95% and cutting new cases by 90% between 2015 and 2035.
Although the world is on track to achieve the Millennium Development Goal to reverse the spread of TB by 2015, TB remains a major cause of death by infectious disease in the world, resulting in more than 8 million deaths last year.
In order to achieve such ambitious targets will require commitments from governments around the world to:
- integrated, patient-centred care and prevention
- investing the necessary resources and involving a wide range of organisations, including government, communities and the private sector
- research and innovation to develop new tools to tackle TB.
