TB Alert supporter, Simon Richardson, features in an article in the US edition of Men’s Health magazine that examines epidemiologists at the front line of efforts to prevent global pandemics of infectious diseases.
Scientific advances, such as DNA fingerprinting, are reported to have made it possible to identify the virus or bacteria responsible for disease outbreaks in less than 48 hours – aiding containment. The global community is credited with advancing global epidemiology efforts in response to the HIV epidemic. The HIV virus remained unidentified for three years, allowing the disease to spread to epidemic proportions – in turn allowing the resurgence of tuberculosis among people who’s immune systems were weakened by the virus.
